Virginia imposes a state sales tax of 5.3% on retail sales of tangible personal property and certain services, with regional taxes bringing combined rates to 6% or higher in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads. Groceries are taxed at a reduced 2.5% rate. Businesses must register with the Department of Taxation.
